Dryer users have limited access to the courts. You have numbers and persistence instead.
We give you a hand dryer cheat sheet to show owners what their machines are doing, and we ask for your help building a public record.
Courts limit dryer user access by arguing you have not been harmed, while providing paths for those who purchased them to sue for redress. Without significant financial resources it is difficult to get through that barrier. The dryer companies and the certifiers who validate them survive because it is nearly impossible to build a direct line from your use of one machine to an illness you get later. We have spent three years scientifically constructing that bridge — but the courts will not recognize it without sophisticated, expensive legal action most people cannot mount.
A lawsuit was never the only way to win. You have power the courts can't give and can't take away.
You didn't choose this. You trusted the claim that these machines were efficient, clean, and safe. They are installed where you work, where you eat, where you take your children. They spray water all over the room and the user, and everyone treats it as normal. It is bizarre. Dryers take eight to ten times longer to dry hands than claimed, requiring eight to ten times more energy and carbon. They amplify room-air contamination by 49 to 110 times and spray it onto your hands and into the room. They grow mold on the wall beneath them. You became the test subject, and no one asked.
The manufacturer is the easy and proper target. They built the machine and the claims that came with it.
Less obvious are the certifiers and testing companies that have validated these machines since 2007: a mark from UL Solutions, NSF, SGS, or SmartEPD, the companies a reasonable person trusts to make sure a product does what it claims and is safe. They set the standards, ran the tests, and stamped the mark you trusted every time you walked into that restroom. They are not bystanders.
We spent three years carefully constructing a body of primary evidence. Take our evidence, make yourself heard, then join us by giving us your own. We want all the photos. All the videos. All the stories. The more of us who document what these machines do, the harder it becomes for purchasers to keep using them.
226 restrooms across five states. 169 dryers. 462 drying trials. 1,076 culture dishes, counting approximately 50,000 bacterial and fungal colonies by hand. Primary evidence gathered one restroom at a time.
Every prior paper in the literature. Every existing standard. Hundreds of hours inside the manufacturers' and certifiers' own documents and marketing — where every claim lives, and where all the claims fail.
White paper towels tested in public restrooms consistently approach sterility. In 103 field trials we found white towels almost bacteria-free, unlike brown paper towels that test contaminated. Offer owners a solution that fits perfectly and inexpensively over the spot where the dryer sits.
The photo from your restroom. The video of water on the floor. The story from your shift. The complaint to the owner who installed it. We complained, politely, before launching this project. They rejected it. Let's hit it hard.
You don't need a lawyer, a budget, or permission. You need the facts and a little persistence.
Stop. Skip the dryer. Find a better way to dry your hands, or skip the restroom entirely if you can.
Print. Hand our guide-sheet to the manager where you work, eat, and shop. Put the evidence in the hand of the person who decides.
Complain. To the owners who installed the machine, and to the agencies that regulate the claims. Both work better when thousands of us do it.
Send. Your photo, your video, your account. Send us what you've seen — every one strengthens the record that gets these machines removed.
